Addressing Root Causes of Conflict: SPRING Research Highlights Substance Abuse Among IDP Youth
On October 29, #GoGreen joined fellow stakeholders and implementing partners for a strategic engagement session where the SPRING Team presented key findings from research conducted across several Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Benue State.
The study shed light on the deep-seated factors driving conflict within these vulnerable communities—and one of the most prevalent triggers identified was drug and substance abuse, particularly among young people. This challenge not only fuels rising tensions but also erodes community cohesion and exposes youth to cycles of violence, trauma, and instability.
These insights highlight the urgent need for holistic peacebuilding approaches that go beyond immediate conflict resolution. Addressing substance abuse demands a coordinated strategy that provides young people with access to education, livelihood opportunities, mentorship, and psychosocial support—empowering them to build resilience, find purpose, and choose healthier pathways.
At #GoGreen, we remain deeply committed to advancing community-driven solutions that strengthen peace, restore dignity, and spark hope in displacement settings. By working alongside local actors, partners, and youth networks, we aim to foster safer environments where vulnerable populations can rebuild their lives free from fear and insecurity.
We also call on young people across affected communities to reject substance abuse—not only for their own wellbeing but for the stability and progress of their communities. By embracing positive lifestyles and meaningful engagement, youth can become true agents of peace, preventing conflict before it begins.
