AgroPastoral Integration
for Peace and Sustainable Development
(AIPASD)

Project Overview

The AgroPastoral Integration for Peace and Sustainable Development (AIPASD) project is a community-led peacebuilding and livelihoods initiative implemented by GoGreen Environmental Health Sustainability Initiatives under the Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRiNG) Programme, funded by the UK Government (UK FCDO).
AIPASD responds to the long-standing farmer–herder conflicts in Benue State, which have led to loss of lives, displacement, destruction of livelihoods, and deep social divisions within communities. The project seeks to transform conflict drivers into opportunities for cooperation by bringing farmers and pastoralists together through agropastoralism, dialogue, and joint community action.

Project Goal

To strengthen peaceful coexistence, resilience, and social cohesion between farmers and herders in conflict-affected communities in Benue State through integrated agropastoral practices, inclusive dialogue, and community-driven peace initiatives.

Where We Work

AIPASD is being implemented in eight conflict-affected communities across Makurdi and Guma Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Benue State, Nigeria.
These communities have experienced repeated cycles of violence, displacement, mistrust, and livelihood disruptions linked to land use, grazing routes, climate pressures, and weak conflict-resolution mechanisms.

What We Do

AIPASD adopts a conflict-sensitive, inclusive, and community-led approach that combines peacebuilding with sustainable livelihoods. Key interventions include:

  1. Agropastoral Integration & Livelihood Support
Establishment of demonstration farms jointly managed by farmers and herders
Training on agropastoral practices, including pasture development and sustainable crop-livestock integration
Practical demonstrations on pasture preservation techniques and bio-fertilizer production from cow dung, promoting environmental sustainability and shared economic benefits.
  2. Dialogue, Trust-Building & Social Cohesion
Facilitation of structured dialogues between farmers, herders, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders
Support to Community Peace Committees (CPCs) to manage disputes, mediate tensions, and promote early conflict resolution
Regular review and reflection sessions to assess progress, strengthen accountability, and reinforce peaceful behaviors.
  3. Community-Led Peace Initiatives
Joint community activities that encourage collaboration rather than competition over land and resources
Promotion of inclusive participation of women, youth, and persons with disabilities in peace and livelihood processes
Strengthening local ownership of peacebuilding structures for long-term sustainability.

Our Approach

AIPASD is anchored on the belief that peace is most sustainable when it is locally owned. The project prioritizes:

  • Community leadership and participation.
  • Conflict sensitivity and Do-No-Harm principles.
  • Gender equality and social inclusion (GESI).
  • Evidence-based learning and adaptation.
  • Alignment with government and traditional institutions.

By linking peacebuilding with shared economic interests, the project addresses both the root causes and triggers of conflict.

Early Results & Impact

Through AIPASD, communities are beginning to experience:

  • Improved communication and trust between farmers and herders.
  • Reduced tensions and faster resolution of disputes through community mechanisms.
  • Increased knowledge and adoption of sustainable agropastoral practices.
  • Stronger collaboration around shared livelihoods and environmental stewardship.
  • Renewed confidence in community-led peace structures.
